Meet the Mind behind the Mission
Jessica Candela
Welcome! I’m Jess Candela, a passionate educator and tutor with a heart for K–8 learners, but experience that spans from infancy through adulthood. After accumulating over 20 years of experience educating learners — including 12 years as a professional teacher— I’ve had the privilege of teaching and supporting thousands of students across a wide range of settings, in multiple US states. From leading K-8 classrooms in Science/STEM, Math, ELA, Writing/Grammar and Reading, to ABA therapy in the classrooms and community and leading Special Education PA2 programs, my work has always centered on one thing: helping each child thrive.
I create specialized settings to build individualized learning plans that actually work, and I make it my mission to bring out the best in every learner using a holistic approach, steeped in empathy and respect.
Whether it's through tutoring, camps, or providing parents with homeschooling (or traditional schooling) support and tools to help kids reach their goals, I am here with you every step of the way to create an education that they deserve.
My approach is deeply personal and rooted in connection. This sets my work apart, as I build a foundation for your child's success by first making it my mission to truly learn the learner. I take time to understand each student’s unique learning style, personality, social-emotional needs, and goals — and then build from their strengths to support their areas of growth. This approach creates learning experiences that are both empowering and effective. Whether I’m supporting academic goals, emotional growth, real-world skills, or acting as a personal assistant to parents on their homeschooling journey, I show up with empathy, curiosity, consistency, and a firm belief in their potential. I don't just teach- I connect, I adapt, and I nurture confidence every step of the way.
If you’re looking for someone who honors your child as a whole person — someone who blends heart, strategy, and deep experience with the tools and professional expertise to help them thrive — welcome. You’ve landed in the right place. Their confidence, growth, and well-being are at the heart of everything I do; their progress is my purpose, and I'm honored to walk alongside them as they grow.

About Us
Kids are naturally avid learners. They are filled with curiosity, imagination, and creativity- so why do so many kids hate school? Because it's not truly serving their needs. The Learning Loft was founded with one clear mission: to reimagine education as a place of curiosity, discovery, and lifelong learning. After more than a decade serving as a teacher in public schools across New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New Orleans, I can no longer ignore my pivotal realization—children deserve more than standardized tests, crowded classrooms, lack of movement and expression, and a forced one-size-fits-all instruction. They deserve an education that values their individuality, fuels their curiosity, and helps them thrive both academically and personally.
As a science specialist, I’ve had the honor of teaching grades K–8, and I’ve seen firsthand how the traditional school system stifles children’s natural love of learning. Students who enter school full of questions, ideas, and creativity, typically by the time they reach third grade, quickly learn to stay quiet, “fit in,” and avoid standing out. Their curiosity is dimmed, their confidence shaken, and instead of innovating or thinking outside the box, they do only what the teacher dictates. Everything is scripted, and curiosity does not drive their path of education (after all, the education system was designed to create obedient, productive factory workers- not critical thinkers and innovators- and its design is far outdated).
The system simply does not work as it should. For years, I felt like a hypocrite for serving an institution that doesn't serve the precious children within it, and having a child of my own gave me the fire that I needed to step out of this matrix and create the rich educational environment that I know he deserves. Rather than sitting confined to a desk for 7–8 hours a day with less than an hour for lunch and physical movement, he deserves to be moving, exploring, asking questions, and applying what he learns to real-life. He should be getting his hands dirty, getting his brain flowing with critical problem-solving skills and not navigating an overcrowded environment with lack of personalized attention. He doesn't deserve to face social pressures, bullying, or the many conflicts that come with today’s school environments. And all of this potential damage is done in the name of preparing them for standardized tests—not for real life. I know that my child's personality is too large, too bright, too bold, to fit into the mold of a traditional classroom- and I will not send him down a path that is meant to dim his light.
This is where The Learning Loft steps in.
I know that every child is capable of learning and growing when given the right environment. Time and again, I’ve seen that when learning is tailored, engaging, and purposeful, students don’t just succeed—they flourish. What makes The Learning Loft different is our belief that children learn best when they are:
-
Given both structure and freedom
-
Encouraged to explore and ask questions
-
Supported with respect, patience, and individualized guidance
-
Able to set goals at their own pace with a trusted mentor
The Learning Loft is built on these principles.

At The Learning Loft, we believe education goes far beyond memorization and testing. It should be an adventure—a journey where children feel capable, curious, and inspired every step of the way. Our mission is to bring joy back into learning and empower students to grow into lifelong learners, innovators, and confident leaders who use their unique talents to light the world. Our Story & Mission

FAQ's
Who We Are
This is where I spill my guts- the journey of how the Learning Loft came to be.
Before graduating, we had to complete a Capstone project. Naturally doing a capstone can be stressful, but I do enjoy the process of writing because it can help the "introverted" to express, explore, and learn themselves better. I was asked by the board members during my Capstone interview if I would give them permission to share my paper with future graduating classes as an example (and although I enjoy writing, it wasn't attributed to my grammar as so much as my passion towards creating a better system of education).
I've had the privilege of working with thousands of children ages 0-18+, primarily in K-8. After dedicating myself as an educator for the majority of my life, in several states (NH, MA, and New Orleans, LA).
I've envisioned a better education system, and I know what it includes- structure, routine, exploration, freedom, curiosity, hands-on discovery, expression, movement, choices, and respect.
Having served in public schools for 12 years and professionally taught for over 10 years, it inspired me but damaged me from the frustration of feeling like a hypocrite. I came to be an educator because of the love for children and their absorbent, interested minds, along with the fulfillment of seeing them learn, grow, and thrive with joy and purpose.
Unfortunately, the teachers serving public schools are doing the best they can (most of them), yet the system is structured to maintain a certain level of control. The responsibility of the school then has to shift control from the child's well being, to the standardized testing, which infuriates me as a teacher. Having been the lead teacher of a special education substantially separate PA2 class, I taught four grades of students in one room, with varying ability levels (from pooping themselves in class and unable to hold a pencil, to kids running out of the room, to kids above grade level, and more), and one thing is in common: if the passion is present, the child will thrive. If it is a predetermined forced curriculum which has no relevance or appeal, or if the information is presented in a way that is not engaging or purposeful, they will disregard the information. It's also hard for kids to focus in large environments- naturally, having nearly 30 kids in a classroom makes a big difference from saying, having 5-10 kids in a learning environment at a time.
In order for academic standards to be held high (which, the perfectionist in me values high academic expectations, because I know that every child is capable of learning, and what makes us different at the Learning Loft and is critical in the successful art of learning, is that we must learn in ways that we understand, at our own pace, and SET OUR OWN GOALS, with the help of a guide at the Learning Loft.
I could write an entire dissertation on why I've decided that it's time to step up and move forward with education, rather than subjecting the future to a stifled system of education that limits their creative abilities and forces the lack of creativity, authoritarianism, and scheduled everything lack of movement, promotion of uniformity, environments not conducive to learning like large class sizes, pressure for testing on the teacher which pushes an agenda and limits the amount of natural "flowing" which is the real, meat of the learning.
Having a child is pushing me now, and I know that I can't keep on going in this direction. Serving my time as a teacher gave me unbelievable experience that I will carry over with me to my new road as an educator. It is time to take the journey into my own hands, and supply an education for up to 5 children during our first year opening as a micro-school. That's the ultimate goal.
For now, we are giving our heart to: 1:1 tutoring (for deep intervention, at minimum 1 month, with 1 free trial) sessions, small group tutoring sessions (save money and create an interactive environment), homeschooling consulting for families who want to homeschool their own child(ren) but don't know where to start or are struggling, assistance for children with special needs and working with parents and/or children to collaboratively guide growth and success plans for their students. I love tailoring education to the students, as it is fun to learn each unique thumbprint of a child and apply it to their success story. We also plan to set up the Learning Lab- a mobile learning center. An educational fiesta on wheels! This is great for birthday or holiday parties, school vacations, or any function where childcare is needed.
